A local organization is helping to feed those in need in the community.

Habitat for Humanity Chatham-Kent has unveiled six new raised garden beds outside its ReStore and offices on Junction Road in Chatham.

Anne Taylor, Habitat’s Director of Partnerships and Stakeholder Relations, says the project represents a commitment to community well-being, local food security, and sustainable growing practices.

“We thought we would bring in large raised beds and that way everybody could participate who wanted to help garden,” she said.

Volunteers and other community organizations will help oversee the garden and harvest the vegetables this summer.

All harvested produce will then be donated to food assistance programs, helping to increase access to nutritious food for individuals and families in need.

“Once the food is grown and harvested, it will go to local food banks,” said Taylor. “So it’ll be used up quickly throughout our community.”

Hydro One Councillor Ward Funding from Mayor Darrin Canniff and Chatham councillors Brock McGregor and Connor Allin, totalling $4,743.15, helped enable the purchase of the garden beds, soil, and plants.
