Hate Crimes Lead To Charges For 19-Year-Old

A local teen is facing charges in connection with hate-motivated crimes in Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers responded to the area of Prince Street North in Chatham on Tuesday to investigate the incidents.

While details about what transpired have not been released, authorities said members of the local Muslim community were targeted.

As a result, a 19-year-old Chatham man was arrested and is now charged with two counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of uttering threats, three counts of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and mischief under $5,000.

Following a court appearance on Wednesday, the accused was remanded into custody.

Police officials said they have been in contact with leaders from the Muslim community to update them on the investigation and offer support.
