In honour of the upcoming National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, Walpole Island Employment and Training is teaming up with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent for a healing walk through downtown Wallaceburg.
The fifth annual Healing Walk and Gathering will take place Wednesday, September 30 at 10:30 a.m. The event is open to everyone and people are encouraged to wear orange shirts.
The walk will begin at the Wallaceburg library and continue to Civic Square Park, where a ceremony will be held to honour the survivors of residential schools and the children who never returned home.
The ceremony will include drumming and dance. Some of the survivors and their family members from Walpole Island will also be present and some will share their experiences of how residential schools have impacted their lives.
James Street will be closed to traffic between McNaughton Avenue and Fork Street during the healing walk. The road is expected to reopen around noon.
