With a rise in hospitalizations expected in the coming weeks, Chatham-Kent’s health unit is urging local residents to protect themselves against respiratory viruses by getting vaccinated.
Chatham-Kent Public Health said getting vaccinated for influenza, COVID-19, and RSV if eligible, is particularly important heading into the holiday season when more people are gathering indoors.
“It’s not too late to get your vaccines and ensure the safety of your families and communities during this festive season,” says Dr. Shanker Nesathurai, CK’s acting medical officer of health. “By taking these preventive measures, we can enjoy a safe and happy holiday season while minimizing the risk of respiratory infections.”
With over 11,000 new cases of COVID-19 detected in Ontario this past week, public health officials said they are anticipating a rise in hospitalizations heading into January.
CK Public Health reported 36 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the municipality between November 26 and December 2, while no new cases of influenza were detected.
Health officials emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated to ensure hospitals do not become overburdened due to a strain on capacity.
Influenza vaccines are available at physician offices and community health centers while COVID-19 vaccines can be obtained at the CK Public Health clinic. Both vaccines are also available at participating pharmacies.
