Highlighting the Importance of Music Education

A group of Catholic elementary schools are teaming up for a pair of free concerts.

Students from Holy Family School, Christ the King, and St Elizabeth in Wallaceburg are working with Sacred Heart in Sarnia and Petrolia’s St Philip School.

Officials with the St Clair Catholic District School Board say the concerts, being held in Sarnia and Wallaceburg next week, allow the student to fine-tune their musical literacy and develop better relationship-building skills.

“It’s the basis of literacy, it’s the basis of math, and more importantly it’s part of being human,” says music itinerant teacher Jennifer Trinca. “Our students are very fortunate at St Clair Catholic, they get music itinerant specialists with them in their  classrooms, and to be able to express those human emotions and learning on top of that is crucial.”

Over 100 students packed the gym at Holy Family yesterday for a rehearsal. Trinca says it’s a chance for the kids to experience learning in new and creative ways.

“Study after study shows us that singing in a group of any number is so good, not only for musical ability, but for your social well-being, for your mindfulness, and even for your physical fitness.”

One concert will be held at Sacred Heart next Tuesday at 12:30pm, with two performances at Holy Family Catholic School on Wednesday at 10:30am and 12:15pm.
