Those travelling on Highway 401 will soon reach their destinations a little faster.

The Ontario government said it will be raising the speed limit from 100 km/h to 110 km/h on an additional 938 kilometres of provincial highways beginning on Friday.

The changes will take effect gradually across Ontario, with the speed limit on Highway 401 through Chatham-Kent expected to be updated on August 31.

“With this new speed limit in place, drivers travelling from Sarnia to Toronto could save nearly 20 minutes, while those travelling from Toronto to Ottawa could save nearly half an hour,” the province said in a news release.

The move follows a multi-year pilot project that saw the speed limit raised on six sections of provincial highways in 2022, and then another 10 sections in 2024 to align with posted speed limits in other jurisdictions across Canada. The section of Highway 401 between Tilbury and Windsor was among those first chosen.

According to the province, speed limit increases are only implemented on highways designed and engineered to safely accommodate higher speeds.
