Captain Stephanie Watkinson with the Salvation Army says it’s not a high profile issue.
“When it does become visible people are shocked by it. We do have a homelessness problem in Chatham-Kent. Not a huge degree, people are finding temporary housing through couch surfing or staying with family or friends,” says Watkinson. “There’s a lot of housing instability in Chatham-Kent that we are trying to address through community partners to find stable housing for people.”
Watkinson says there are a number of ways local residents can help, by supporting programs like area food banks, soup kitchens, and community gardens.
