Honouring a Historic Crossroads in Dawn Mills

The Chatham-Kent Heritage Network is marking a milestone this weekend with the unveiling of its 30th and final heritage plaque.

The plaque, titled Dawn Mills: A Crossroads Through the Ages, will be unveiled this Saturday, October 10th at 1 p.m. at the Dawn Mills Cemetery.

Author and researcher Kae Elgie says the plaque highlights difficult local history, from 19th-century racial prejudice and integration to the privatization of an ancient Indigenous roadway linking the Thames and Sydenham Rivers.

Financial contributions for the plaque came through Hydro One councillor ward funding courtesy of Ward 3 Councillors Morena McDonald and John Wright and Mayor Darrin Canniff, as well as the Elgie family, Fehr family, and other current and former Dawn Mills residents.

The unveiling will be followed by a reception at Grace Fellowship, the former Dawn Mills United Church. Everyone is welcome to attend.
