Hospital Board Structure Discussed

Members of the former Sydenham Hospital Board are concerned about where they stand within the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance.

Supervisor Rob Devitt says he’s in the process of finding a board structure that will work in Chatham-Kent, as the past three boards have had very different structures.

“We have the Sydenham model, where citizens pay a fee and in return for that fee, they get to vote at an annual meeting, “That’s one that some people say is democratic, I would suggest to you about a year and a half ago we had a federal election, I don’t recall having to pay to vote.”

Devitt says the new board may be a blend of the past three boards, or a completely new structure.

I haven’t landed on the structure I’m going to use yet,” Devitt says. “I don’t think it’s black and white, it’s not paid versus just skilled based, there’s some hybrids in there as well.”

The three hospital boards were dissolved following last summer’s provincial investigation into the Health Alliance’s governance.
