A spill in the St. Clair River has reportedly been contained.

Officials with Suncor issued an alert just after 7:30 Wednesday evening after an incident involving a release of hydrocarbon.

Blooms and vacuums have been deployed to contain the chemical, however residents are urged to avoid taking any water directly from the river.

The statement said community members may notice increased activity near the dock area and the potential for odours.

A statement from the St. Clair Township Fire Department says the municipal water system has not been affected, and water operators from Walpole Island first Nation say monitoring and precautionary measures remain ongoing.
