Improper Stop On Highway 401 Almost Causes Collision

A driver from Brampton is facing charges after an improper stop for police on Highway 401 in Chatham-Kent almost resulted in a serious collision.

The Ontario Provincial Police said an officer recently attempted to pull over a passenger vehicle in the eastbound lanes of the highway for a traffic violation.

However, when the officer activated their emergency lighting to signal the driver to pull over, the vehicle stopped abruptly in live traffic. The driver then moved to the median shoulder and then into the path of oncoming vehicles, before ultimately stopping for police on the right shoulder.

A 37-year-old Brampton resident is now charged with speeding and failing to properly stop for an emergency vehicle.

Authorities are reminding drivers to move to the right shoulder of the roadway when approached by emergency vehicles with lights and/or sirens activated.
