An investigation into a possible fourth underground gas well near the site of the August explosion in Wheatley is still ongoing.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said contractors have completed hydro-vac trenching and asphalt removal around the exterior of 17 Talbot Road East, where low-level gas readings were detected from soil vapour probes last week.

No well was found in the excavated areas but the results of the investigation are being analyzed to determine if any next steps are required.

In the meantime, investigators are still trying to determine the source and pathways of the hydrogen sulphide gas that caused the explosion in downtown Wheatley on August 26.

Contractors will begin re-drilling the Tait well in the municipal parking lot this week. Investigators will collect gas samples, analyze the existing structure and ultimately prepare for re-abandonment. The process is expected to take around two weeks.

Operational plans are also being drawn to further investigate the other two well sites.
