The Chatham-Kent Public Health Unit is now handing out potassium iodine tablets to residents primarily in West Kent and the Rondeau Park area in the event of a nuclear disaster in the US.
The pills reduce or block radioactive iodine taken into the thyroid if the correct dose is consumed right before or during exposure to airborne radioactive iodine.
Only those residents who are within an 80 kilometer radius of Michigan’s Fermi plant and two Ohio plants are eligible.
The pills will be handed out in Wheatley today at the public library, and the municipal office in Tilbury tomorrow.
