Over a decade in the making, a new Indigenous Outdoor Space has opened at Lambton College.

College officials say the purpose-built gathering space was created to support Indigenous learners, Indigenous education programming, Indigenous-focused professional development that supports cultural competency, and partnerships with Indigenous communities.

“This is one of the most meaningful days in the history of Lambton College,” said Rob Kardas, President & CEO, Lambton College in a news release. “The Indigenous Outdoor Space is a visible reminder that Indigenous culture belongs here, and it is a visible commitment that Indigenous learners and Indigenous community members belong here, too.”

Located at the south end of Lambton College’s main campus, the $8-million design was led by Wanda Dalla Costa, the first First Nations woman architect in Canada.

“It was important for the Indigenous Outdoor Space Steering Committee to approach the land in our traditional ways with respect while sharing our intentions for the space, and we continue with this respectful relationship,” said Jane Manning, Director of Indigenous Education at Lambton College. “We were focused on the future possibilities of this space and how it can support Indigenous students in seeing themselves represented at the College, and the Indigenous Outdoor Space accomplishes that.”

Officials say the Indigenous Outdoor Space supports Lambton College’s ongoing commitment to Indigenous education and Truth and Reconciliation.
