The Chatham-Kent Legal Clinic (CKLC) will be able to continue providing its paralegal housing stability services for the next two years, if council approves the renewal Monday.
Council will vote on a motion to approve a two-year sole source agreement with the clinic valued at $156,000, fully funded through the Homeless Prevention Program (HPP).
According to a report from Director of Housing Services Kim Crew, the clinic provided 4,134 services to 615 unique individuals in Chatham-Kent in 2025 through its Housing Stability Program. That support resulted in 488 “saved tenancies” out of 503 households considered at risk of eviction.
The clinic is the only non-profit community legal clinic in Chatham-Kent and provides legal services to low-income and disadvantaged residents. This funding would support efforts to prevent evictions and to ensure tenants understand their rights under the Residential Tenancies Act.
With renovictions becoming a growing concern for renters, Crew notes in the report that the clinic will be able to “play a critical role” by offering guidance, legal advocacy, and referrals to additional supports to help residents maintain stable and secure housing.
