Hours before the nomination deadline for parties leading up to Ontario’s June 2nd election, the Liberal party has ditched one of its local candidates.
Party officials confirm Alec Mazurek, who was just nominated to run in Chatham-Kent-Leamington this past weekend, has now been terminated following revelations by the NDP he posted homophobic slurs on Facebook eight years ago.
Speaking at a mental health announcement this morning, Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca said while he was unaware of the Mazurek issue specifically, it was important for leaders to take decisive actions in such situations. An announcement about Mazurek’s termination came shortly after.
Mazurek was just selected by the Liberals at a nomination meeting on Saturday. It’s unclear at this point who, if anyone, will be replacing him in the riding. The nomination deadline for candidates is 2pm Thursday afternoon.
