Two local women have become the latest victims of the so-called Grandparent Scam making the rounds.
Police say victims receive a call from someone claiming to be a family member or a family member’s lawyer, saying they are in trouble with police and need money for bail.
Chatham-Kent Police say an elderly Wallaceburg woman was tricked into withdrawing $5000, while a Dresden woman was bilked out of $10,000.
Police say scammers will often use panic, threatening language, or an aggressive tone to scare their victims into making payments.
Area residents are encouraged to talk to their parents, grandparents, and senior family members to warn them about the risks.
