A local conservation authority has received national recognition for its environmental stewardship of Lake Erie.

The magazine Water Canada presented the Lower Thames Valley Conservation Authority (LTVCA) with the Conservation Project Award for its Precision Phosphorous Reduction Program (PPRP). The award recognizes a conservation project that exemplifies exceptional stewardship and environmental responsibility in the Canadian water sector.

“The LTVCA has demonstrated exceptional leadership in water conservation through its Phosphorus Reduction Program. This initiative highlights the importance of working collaboratively with the local agricultural community to advance our shared mission of responsible management of Ontario’s water, land and natural habitats now and into the future,” said Angela Coleman, General Manager of Conservation Ontario, in a news release.

LTVCA program coordinator Donna Small accepted the award during the publication’s annual summit on October 22.

PPRP was established in 2024 to reduce phosphorus loads from entering Lake Erie and help prevent harmful algal blooms and areas of low-oxygen.
