Making CK More Dementia Friendly

A local organization is working to create a safer and more inclusive community.

The Alzheimer Society of Chatham-Kent (ASCK) is recruiting businesses to join its Dementia Friendly program, aimed at creating safe spaces for those living with dementia and their care partners.

A Dementia Friendly Community Supporter is a business, organization, or agency that has received formal education to better serve their clients and customers who are affected by Alzheimer’s disease and related dementias. Staff learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of dementia, and are able to engage in a more empathetic, understanding manner.

Tara Seney, ASCK Public Education Manager says the training allows for a safer, more comfortable experience for both staff and customers.

“Thinking more about the environment,” Seney explains. “Thinking about Christmas just around the corner, maybe the music is turned down a little bit, maybe there are more signs about where the washrooms are. Family members, knowing that this place is dementia friendly and supportive, maybe they’ll be more apt to share the news that this person is living with dementia so there’s more understanding and empathy.”

Seney says its part of a greater movement to create safe spaces for residents of any age.

“It’s just like anything that’s age friendly, whatever’s good for somebody who is older, maybe if you’re thinking about steps so people can see the step going into the building, maybe that’s also good for a young mother who has a stroller.”

The Dementia Friendly training includes an hour-long course, provided either in person or online, and requires at least 75% of public-facing staff to become certified.

Since the program launched in August, 2024, 20 businesses have become certified, including clothing boutiques, florists, and pharmacies in communities across Chatham-Kent.

The Alzheimer Society has an interactive map on its website, highlighting businesses, organizations, and agencies that have been deemed a Dementia Friendly Community Supporter.
