According to a federal study, the average Canadian couple will waste nearly 400 kilograms of food per capita each and every year.

A Toronto based group is hoping to change that.

Food Rescue will be working with the Chatham-Kent Health Unit to try and divert food headed to the land fill to local Non Profits.

The group uses a web based technology to reach out to grocery stores and restaurants to find out what is being tossed out, and make sure it gets to places in the community that need it.

So far the program is working in places like Toronto and Kingston and they have managed to divert about 8,000 pounds of food.

The Chatham-Kent involvement is still in the early stages.
