Man Arrested For Public Intoxication

A man visiting Chatham was forced to sleep it off in a jail cell after he was allegedly seen yelling and threatening people in downtown Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers attended the area around the Third Street bridge shortly before 3 p.m. on Wednesday after receiving reports from concerned citizens.

A highly intoxicated man was seen in the area yelling at pedestrians as they walked by and threatening to throw them in the river.

Officers located the man, who was not a resident of the municipality, and discovered he was unable to care for himself. For the protection of the individual and members of the public, the man was arrested for being intoxicated in a public place and held in custody until sober.
