Mask Bylaw Would Be Tough to Repeal

Even with a vocal group of residents opposed to Chatham-Kent’s mandatory mask rules, it doesn’t seem likely it will be brought back for discussion around the council table any time soon.

About 30 people rallied in front of the Civic Centre on Saturday, calling for an end to the municipal bylaw.

Mayor Darrin Canniff says any motion to discuss an existing bylaw has to be raised by someone who voted in favour of the original motion, followed by a two-thirds vote to reopen the debate.

“Or if they didn’t vote, they can’t bring it up, so the only people that can bring it up is someone that supported the mask bylaw and say “I would like to get rid of it now,” that’ the only person that can bring it up.”

Canniff says the mask issue has been very divisive in the community, but what he’d really like to see is a time when masks aren’t necessary and the pandemic is behind us.
