Mayor Canniff: “C-K Stands In Solidarity With The Black Community”

Chatham-Kent Mayor Darrin Canniff says it was he and his family’s privilege to show support for residents taking part in the Black Lives Matter march in Chatham on Friday night.
A crowd of up to 2,000 local residents took part in the movement that left the WISH Centre at 7pm.
“We stand in solidarity with the Black community,” says the Mayor. “Our local history as a destination of refuge from those fleeing slavery and oppression, as important as it is, does not make Chatham-Kent immune to the racism that plagues society. We can and we must do better. The protests around the world show that the time as arrived for everyone to work toward that goal.”
The Municipality lowered the municipal flag at the Civic Centre during the marchers’ pause outside the facility, the final destination of the march.
Mayor Canniff says the lowering of the municipal flag was meant to demonstrate our commitment to the cause of racial equality.
