Nearly two dozen medical students are in Chatham-Kent this week to learn about what a typical workday entails for local healthcare professionals.

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) will host 21 first-year students from Western University’s Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry from May 27-30 as part of Discovery Week 2024.

Throughout the week, students will have the opportunity to shadow family physicians, specialists, nurse practitioners and allied healthcare professionals. They will also be participating in social events each evening to experience firsthand some of the many amenities offered in Chatham-Kent.

“This initiative provides an excellent opportunity to introduce our community to future physicians, and it has encouraged many participating medical students to return to Chatham-Kent for electives in their third and fourth years,” said Dr. Zeke Milkovic, the acting chief of staff at CKHA, in a news release.

Discovery Week is designed to expose students to practicing medicine outside of large urban areas before they make firm plans for their careers.

This year’s annual initiative will see a total of 191 Schulich medical students taking part in various participating healthcare settings across southwestern Ontario.
