A meeting with provincial officials may have been a bit of a wash for local library services.
Chatham-Kent’s Chief Librarian Tania Sharpe spend part of her weekend meeting with MPP Rick Nicholls and Minister of Tourism, Culture, and Sport Michael Tibollo as part of a roundtable with librarians from across the riding of Chatham-Kent Leamington.
However, Sharpe says there were no commitments made.
“The Minister gave the stance of the government, they’re very committed to cutting the deficit and how all the departments had to find cuts,” Sharpe says. “I think we were able to let him know what the cost is to us, what it would do to our bottom line, but I think he still sees the services as antiquated, out of date, inefficient.”
Sharpe says staff were all very impressed with Tibollo’s knowledge and understanding of the benefit of public libraries.
The 11 CKPL branches borrowed 13,000 items through the inter-library loan service, which was recently axed due to a loss of funding.
