Almost two years to the date a gas explosion rocked downtown Wheatley, a special announcement is set to be made.

Municipal officials say this afternoon’s announcement will include representatives from the Ontario government and municipal staff.

Among those in attendance will be Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, Graydon Smith. It’s the Minister’s second trip to Chatham-Kent in the last several months. Back in June, Smith announced $2.5 million to help cover costs associated with the 2021 gas explosion.

The blast destroyed two buildings, left 20 people hurt, and forced the evacuation of hundreds of residents and business owners.
