Ontario’s Liberal Critic for Agriculture and Rural Affairs is once again demanding the Ford government repeal Bill 5.
MPP Ted Hsu was the guest speaker at a meeting in Dresden late last week, and says Premier Doug Ford broke a promise to the people of Dresden after promising area residents their voices would be heard and a comprehensive environmental assessment would be held before a dormant landfill on Irish School Road could be reopened.
Hsu says Bill 5, which was passed in the legislature in June, silenced local voices and stripped away environmental oversight.
“Why single out Dresden? That shows the Ford government doesn’t have a plan for landfills, and not having a plan is just a welcome mat for using money to influence government,” said Hsu. “You know what cancelling the environmental assessment means? You don’t need to talk to the people affected and you don’t need to consider alternatives. That’s convenient. I don’t think this government and their friends want to consider alternatives to Dresden.”
Hsu and Ontario Liberals are urging Ford to repeal Bill 5, restore the environmental assessment, and deliver justice to the residents of Dresden.
