Mural At CKPS Headquarters Moving Forward

A new public art mural featuring Chatham-Kent’s men and women in blue is taking another step toward becoming a colourful reality.

Initially announced in August, the municipality is currently working with the Chatham-Kent Police Service to have a large mural painted on the side of police headquarters in downtown Chatham.

A report coming to the CK Police Services Board on Wednesday is recommending that the board approve spending $15,425 on the 450-square-foot mural through the police mandatory issues reserve. Mayor Darrin Canniff and Councilor Marjorie Crew have also both agreed to contribute an additional $5,000 each through their portions of the Hydro One Community Benefit program, which is designated for recreational and art projects.

“By adorning the police headquarters with a mural, we not only beautify the building but also provide a symbol of unity and understanding,” said Deputy Chief Kirk Early in the report. “The artwork will reflect the diversity and communal experiences of the community, acting as a catalyst for conversations and dialogue between the Chatham-Kent Police Service and the community. The mural will help create a deeper respect for our organization and encourage a positive perception of policing in general, while fostering a sense of belonging within the community.”

The municipality also held a month-long search for artists by accepting submissions through the Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent website during the month of August.

According to the board report, Sarah Steele has been selected as the local artist whose design will adorn police headquarters.

An estimated timeline for the art project has not yet been released.
