Mayor Darrin Canniff says while there is definitely a need for affordable housing, the demands remains for more high-end priced units as well.
“This will be market (value) rent, but we fully expect there’s going to be a lot of affordable housing coming down the way, there’s a lot of people looking to build in Chatham-Kent,” Canniff says.
This will be the second new apartment complex to be announced in the last month. Work has already begun on a pair of condo-style buildings on Park Avenue West.
Canniff says Chatham-Kent is a hot-spot for housing right now, with demand from every age group and price range.
“We’re expecting the federal and provincial governments to do a push for affordable housing and provide incentives,” Canniff says. “It’s something that’s a problem right across the country and both (upper) levels of government realize that.”
In the meantime, plans are moving forward on an affordable housing development just off Grand Avenue East in Chatham, with 30 small homes valued 10% below the current housing market.
