A new book authored by two local surgeons will support stroke care in Chatham-Kent.
The book entitled Frontiers: The Journey of Two Surgeons Through Stroke was written by Dr. Siva Murugappan, a well-known Chatham-Kent surgeon with over 20 years of experience, and his wife, Dr. Prema Samy, an Otolaryngologist surgeon.
Frontiers delves into the often challenging experiences faced by stroke survivors, offering a unique perspective from Dr. Murugappan who has not only treated, but personally triumphed, over the devastating effects of a stroke.
“We wanted to write about our story. In 2017, our lives changed. My husband, a very busy and dedicated surgeon in the community, was in the hospital seeing a patient,” said Dr. Samy, in a news release. “The staff noticed he was unsteady and had facial weakness and immediately realized he was having a stroke. From this moment on, our lives were never the same.”
Five dollars from the sale of each copy of the book will be donated to the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Foundation’s (CKHAF) Stroke Unit Fund.
“By donating a portion of the proceeds from each book sale to the Foundation’s Stroke Unit Fund, they are helping to ensure that local stroke patients continue to receive the high-quality care that they deserve,” said Christine Colautti, president and CEO of the foundation.
Frontiers is now available for purchase at the Chatham-Kent Health Alliance Gift Shops at the Chatham and Wallaceburg sites, and online through Amazon and Indigo.
A book signing will also take place in early December to provide residents a chance to meet the authors. A date for the signing will be announced in the coming days.
