A new midwife with local ties has been added to the team at Chatham-Kent’s hospital.

The Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) in partnership with the Midwives of Chatham-Kent has hired Kara Vandersluis as a full-time midwife.

Vandersluis, a Chatham-Kent native, is a graduate of Laurentian University with a Bachelor of Sciences degree specializing in Midwifery.

“I am so grateful for the opportunity to return back home to Chatham-Kent to be near my family. Providing high-quality midwifery care to the mothers in my hometown is vitally important to me,” she said in a news release

Following her graduation, Vandersluis worked with the Midwifery Services of Durham providing care at a midwifery-led hospital unit at Markham Stouffville Hospital. She later continued her work with Family Care Midwives Vaughan before relocating back to Chatham-Kent.

The Midwives of Chatham-Kent have been supporting women since 1996. Midwives provide a full spectrum of care, including prenatal appointments, labour and delivery support, and postpartum recovery either at home or in the hospital.
