New Safety Equipment To Prevent Gas Leaks In Wheatley

An additional safety measure will soon be installed near the site of last year’s explosion in Wheatley to capture any future gas emissions.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said a “scrubber system” was delivered from Ohio on Tuesday and will be installed in the town’s municipal parking lot.

The unit is designed to capture and trap any future hydrogen sulphide gas emissions and reduce them to zero.

The equipment will be installed and tested this week and is expected to be fully operational within the next few days.

A flare stack, which is currently being used to detect gas emissions, will remain in place at the site as a backup system, the municipality said.

In September, an investigation concluded that methane hydrogen sulphide was to blame for an explosion in downtown Wheatley that destroyed two buildings and injured 20 people on August 26, 2021.
