The Legion in Wheatley hopes to get one step closer to breaking ground at Monday night’s Chatham-Kent council meeting.
The Royal Canadian Legion was previously located on Erie Street North, however the location was deemed unsuitable for redevelopment after the 2021 explosion that rocked downtown Wheatley.
The Legion acquired the new lot on Talbot Road West but requires the council to vote on a zoning by-law change to allow for 21 off-street parking spaces.
Currently, the zoning by-law for an assembly hall requires one parking space for every 4.64 sq. meters of public floor area. The new Legion, at its proposed size, would require 130 parking spaces.
Council will vote to create a site-specific zoning by-law allowing the Legion to have 21 off-street parking spaces, based on the fact the previous building had no off-street parking and attendees had to park in various areas around the assembly hall.
According to a post on the Wheatley Legion Br.324 Facebook page, the group hopes to have more updates on the progress of the build soon.
