Offering Small Biz a Helping Hand

Instead of just providing tax relief to small business, Chatham-Kent council took a step back and will consider a recommendation concerning the forgiveness of late payment charges on tax arrears to additional tax classes.

At Monday’s Chatham-Kent council meeting, administration presented a report asking the late payment charges through to August be waived for small businesses in the industrial or commercial tax classes on a request basis if they could demonstrate a loss of operating income due to provincial health restrictions.

Chatham Coun. Michael Bondy entered an amendment to add residential properties for the waiving of late payment fees.

A staff report on waiving late fees for a number of  tax classes is expected to come back to council at their next council meeting on April 19.
