Ontario drivers will no longer have to renew license plate stickers.
Premier Doug Ford announced this morning that as of March 13th, the government will eliminate license plate renewal fees and the requirement to have a license plate sticker for passenger vehicles, light-duty trucks, motorcycles and mopeds.
Previous reports indicated eliminating renewal fees would cost the government roughly $1-billion in revenue, money Premier Ford now says is being put back into the pockets of Ontarians.
“It’s actually your money, it’s everyone’s money out there, it’s not the government’s money. We’re just putting that back in your pocket,” Ford says. “That’s a billion dollars that’s going back into the economy…you might be able to spend it a lot wiser than the government.”
Renewal fees and requirements for license plate stickers for heavy commercial vehicles and snowmobiles remain unchanged.
The province is also planning to refund eligible individual owners of vehicles for any license plate renewal fees paid since March 2020. Once red tape legislation is passed, vehicle owners will receive a cheque in the mail starting at the end of March and throughout the month of April.
Drivers will still have to renew their driver’s license every five years online or at a ServiceOntario centre and pay a $90 fee.
