OPP Lay More Than 14,000 Charges Around Canada Day

Thousands of charges have been laid following a provincial police enforcement campaign that took place around the Canada Day holiday.

The Ontario Provincial Police said a total of 14,068 charges were laid between June 25 and July 3, including 322 for impaired driving and 167 for distracted driving.

Another 8,287 charges were laid for speeding, while 175 stunt driving charges were also laid.

Four people lost their lives in collisions on OPP-patrolled roads over the Canada Day long weekend, and another person died in an off-road vehicle incident.

The OPP said officers patrolling roads, off-road areas, and waterways were focusing on compliance with lifesaving equipment laws around lifejackets, seatbelts and helmets.

Police said they are reminding motorists and boaters to do their part to keep themselves and their passengers safe while behind the wheel.
