OPP Officer Cleared in Walpole Island Shooting

An OPP officer has been cleared of any wrongdoing by Ontario’s police watchdog following a shooting on Walpole Island earlier this year.

Authorities say on March 2, a man had been threatening people with a gun at home in the area of Dan Shab Road and Chiefs Road North. Lambton OPP responded in support of Walpole Island First Nation Police.

According to investigators with the Ontario Special Investigations Unit, the accused fled in an SUV before police arrived, but during a roadblock attempt, the man sped towards the officers and an OPP officer fired two shots at the vehicle, however no one was hurt.

The SIU found no reasonable grounds to believe the officer committed a criminal offence. In his report, Director Joseph Martino said the shots fired constituted reasonable force to protect another officer when confronted with a real and present danger.
