Orange Shirt Day

You may notice a lot of kids wearing orange shirts to school this week.

It is part of the Every Child Matters campaign, honouring residential school victims and survivors and encouraging learning and understanding about the impact the residential school system had on First Nations, Metis, and Inuit communities.

The movement stems from a BC girl, Phyllis (Jack) Webstad, who had her new orange shirt taken away on her first day at a Mission school in 1973.

The official Orange Shirt Day is September 30th, but most schools are recognizing the event either today or tomorrow.

You can read more about the campaign at orangeshirtday.org.
