A simple welfare check has resulted in charges for a pair of Chatham residents.
The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were asked to check on the well-being of a person at a building on Wellington Street West in Chatham shortly before 10 a.m. on Wednesday.
When police arrived at the scene, a man and a woman were found seated together outside the entrance to the building. The officers learned that the two people were breaching their court-ordered probation conditions by associating with one another. The woman was also wanted on several outstanding warrants, and the man was found with suspected methamphetamine.
As a result, a 30-year-old Chatham man and a 21-year-old Chatham woman were both arrested and charged with failing to comply with probation. The man is additionally charged with possession of a Schedule 1 substance.
The woman will be held at the South West Detention Centre until her next court date, while the man was released from custody, with a court date scheduled for next month.
