PAWR Raising Money To Support Operations In CK

Chatham-Kent’s animal control provider has launched a fundraising campaign to help to support its daily operations and replenish its emergency medical fund.

Pet and Wildlife Rescue (PAWR) is running its second annual Under One Roof campaign from October 1 to November 16.

While PAWR has a contract with the Municipality of Chatham-Kent to provide animal control services and bylaw enforcement, officials with the shelter said those funds don’t cover their overall monthly costs.

During an average month, PAWR said the shelter’s operational costs are around $90,000. Of that, around $15,000 is spent on veterinary care each month.

“Unfortunately, not every animal we take in is of optimal health. Many animals in our care require expensive medical or surgical care,” said Myriam Armstrong, the operations manager for PAWR, in a news release. “The many services we provide, including medical care, is costly and every penny counts when providing extraordinary care to our most vulnerable animals.”

On average, PAWR said it takes in around 3,000 animals each year.
