Pay Raise for CK’s Next Mayor

mayor-randy-hope1Chatham-Kent Council has voted to increase the wages for the future Mayor.

The initial recommendation by the Citizen Review Committee to increase the next Mayor’s salary over 6 figures was turned down, but a decision to increase it by about $10,000 per year passed.

Hope’s current wage is $83,500, the next mayor elected in 2018 will receive $93,605 annually.

Council also agreed to give the next Mayor an “end of service” transition honorarium of $10,000.

Mayor Randy Hope says having a committee made of citizens making the recommendations takes the pressure off Council.

“I thought the committee did an excellent job, taking the pressure off of council and leaving it to the citizen’s review process,” Hope says. “What it does is mitigate the responsibility of council and actually puts it so it’s not a self-serving idea, it’s actually very practical.”

The honorarium for councillors remains the same, despite a recommendation from the committee to grant them a raise as well.
