Pedaling for a Purpose in Chatham

September is World Alzheimer’s Month, and one local cyclist is once again taking on a challenge for the cause.

Starting at six o’clock this Saturday, September 12, Chatham-Kent native and former provincial cycling champion Shawn VanGassen will ride 500 kilometers in 24 hours.

VanGassen began competitive cycling at the age of 14. He has participated in numerous races across Canada, Europe, and the United States, and was named Provincial Champion in 1990.

This month’s Pedaling for a Purpose ride is in honour of his late mother, Patricia, who lived with dementia. VanGassen’s route will take him from the Enbridge offices at the intersection Grand Avenue West and Keil Drive, down Riverview Line to Jacob Road, up Grand River Line, back to Enbridge, and around again until he reaches his goal.

Local residents are invited to support Shawn’s journey by donating to the Alzheimer Society of Chatham-Kent throughout the month of September.

Donations are being accepted online at www.alzheimer.ca/chathamkent, by calling the Alzheimer Society of Chatham-Kent office at 519-352-1043, or in person at 36 Memory Lane in Chatham.
