Pedestrian Struck and Killed by a Train East of Chatham

A local man has died after being struck by a train just east of Chatham.

Emergency crews responded to Northwood Line near Harwich Road shortly after two o’clock Sunday afternoon and say a pedestrian was hit by an eastbound passenger train. Despite emergency measures taken by the train operator, the 34-year-old Chatham man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Chatham-Kent Police Traffic Management Unit was called to investigate, coordinating with railway police and the Office of the Chief Coroner.

The rail corridor was temporary closed while investigators conducted their work.

Authorities say no further details will be released out of respect for the victim’s family.
