Period Promise Social Celebration Being Held in May

A local organization is working to reduce the stigma that still surrounds menstruation and feminine hygiene products.

The United Way Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent is hosting a community celebration later this month, collecting donations of menstrual hygiene products.

Local businesses, school groups, and community organizations are encouraged to start their own collection drive, and drop off donations at the Period Promise Social Celebration at Match Eatery and Public House  in Chatham on Thursday, May 28 between 4 and 7pm.

Organizers say period products remain the most requested but least donated items at local food banks and shelters.

“No one should have to choose between food and basic hygiene,” said Lorraine Goddard, CEO of United Way Windsor-Essex Chatham-Kent in a news release. “Whether you’re a local business hosting a bin or a student group rallying your peers, you are helping us build a more equitable and dignified future for every resident in Chatham-Kent.”

The Period Promise event falls on Menstrual Hygiene Day, a Global Day of Action. All donations collected will stay in Chatham-Kent, distributed through United Way initiatives, food banks and other community-based programs to ensure dignity and access for all.
