Permits Needed for Backyard Fires

With the first long weekend of the season behind us, many local residents struck up a little fire in their backyard.

However, Chatham-Kent Fire and Emergency Services is reminding everyone you need a permit.

The annual permits cost $20 and can be picked up at any municipal service centre.

Public Educator Whitney Burk says your yard must be fire pit ready.

“You do have to make sure your yard is capable of having a fire,” Burk explains. “And what I mean is you can’t have any combustibles within seven metres of your fire pit.”

She adds it is also important to make sure the smoke from your fire doesn’t disturb your neighbors.

Those caught without a permit can face fines, which are outlined on the CK fire website.

Burk says you don’t need a permit for things like chimeneas or outdoor pizza ovens, which are more contained.
