Plans for a new Children’s Treatment Centre get boost from Union Gas

The goal of a new Children’s Treatment Centre in Chatham-Kent has received a financial shot in the arm.

Through its matching gift program with its employees, Union Gas has donated $300,000 to the six-million dollar goal.

“They (the employees) do it because they believe in it,” said Union Gas President Steve Baker during a celebration of the donation on Thursday.  “They donate their financial resources and they donate their time because they know what a great asset the centre is to the community,” he added.

Meantime, the chair of the Treatment Centre’s Foundation, Mike Grail is humbled by the company’s contribution.

“We are just tickled that they (Union Gas) are choosing to make this type of contribution to what we are trying to do for the kids in CK,” Grail said.

Fundraising efforts have now topped $4 million, according to Grail with the remainder to be raised through a short public campaign early next year.

He says efforts to acquire provincial funding for the new centre are ongoing.

The number of children served by the centre has grown by 15-fold over the past 35 years and it’s expected to continue to rise into the future.
