Police Assaulted While Arresting Robbery Suspect

A local man is facing several charges following a robbery at a Chatham business.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said officers were called to a business on Grand Avenue West at around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday after an employee was pushed to the ground while trying to intervene in a theft.

Police located a suspect who matched a description of the thief on Baldoon Road, however, he quickly fled. Officers pursued and caught up with the man, but they were forced to use a conducted energy weapon when he refused to comply.

As a result, a 28-year-old Chatham man was arrested and is now charged with robbery with violence, assaulting a peace officer, and assault with intent to resist arrest. He was taken to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.
