Police Thwart Rooftop Theft

Charges have been laid following an attempted theft on the roof of a downtown business in Chatham.

The Chatham-Kent Police Service said a business owner reported a theft in progress at his property on King Street West at around 4:45 a.m. on Sunday.

A man was located by officers stealing copper flashing off the roof of the business.

As a result, a 43-year-old Chatham-Kent man was arrested and is now charged with mischief under $5,000, theft under $5,000, and trespassing at night.

He was later released from custody and will answer the charges in court next month.
