Power To Be Restored To Properties Near Wheatley Evacuation Zone

Work is ongoing to restore power to buildings that have been disconnected since last summer’s gas explosion in Wheatley.

The Municipality of Chatham-Kent said on Thursday that Entegrus is currently working to restore power to four properties outside of the evacuation zone. It is estimated that electricity will be restored within two to three weeks.

The evacuation zone around the site of the August 26 explosion has been reduced three times since mid-April, allowing more home and business owners to return to their properties.

In the meantime, remediation within the evacuation zone remains paused following a gas release on July 6. Work crews were in the process of installing a large conductor pipe over a well when the gas was detected.

An additional pipe is currently being installed in the municipal parking lot, which will vent any potential future gas release away from workers once remediation continues.

There have been no further gas releases detected since July 6.
