Premier Ford Says Ontario Is In “Second Wave”, PM Trudeau Warns Of Lockdown

Ontario Premier Doug Ford has confirmed that top provincial officials believe Ontario is now experiencing the “second wave” of COVID-19.
Premier Ford made the remarks during Monday’s press briefing at Queen’s Park following 700 new cases across the province. Monday’s new infection numbers are the highest one-day total in Ontario since the pandemic began. It has long been hinted that a second wave could be on the way in the fall as the typical flu and cold season arrives.
The Premier says that health officials believe the second wave will be “worse than the first wave”. However, Ford says they do not yet know just how bad the second wave will be.
New modelling numbers suggest Ontario could see a peak in second wave infections in mid-to-late October with the potential for more than 1,000 new cases a day at that time “if further public health measures aren’t taken.”
Prior to the weekend and Ontario’s latest increase in cases, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned the second wave could lead to another potential lockdown.
“We need top keep vigilant. We need to continue to be very careful. We need to continue to wear our masks, continuing to keep our distances and make sure that we do not see a spike in a second wave that we know would be deadly for Canadians and perhaps cause us to have to go back to the unpleasant places we were in the spring where we were all in lockdown.”
